General Info

Tucked away in a quiet residential corner, Ember Kuala Lumpur is one of those places you hear about through word of mouth and end up bookmarking instantly. Located at 20, Jalan Wan Kadir 1, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, this restaurant has built a strong reputation for thoughtful cooking, warm hospitality, and a menu that feels both refined and comforting at the same time.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels relaxed yet polished. It’s the kind of dining space that works just as well for a casual dinner as it does for a special night out. The menu reflects that balance too, offering dishes that are approachable but layered with technique and flavour. One of the standout plates is the Kampung Chicken with Yuzu Kosho, where the natural richness of the chicken pairs beautifully with the gentle heat and citrusy lift of the seasoning. It’s a dish that stays with you long after the meal.

For those who appreciate a well-cooked steak, Ember Kuala Lumpur delivers consistently. The steak selection is handled with care, focusing on texture and depth rather than unnecessary flair. The Dry Age Duck Breast & Pucuk Paku is another highlight, bringing together tender, flavourful duck with local greens in a way that feels both grounded and elegant. On the more indulgent side, Ember’s Fried Chicken has become a favourite among regulars, praised in reviews for its crisp exterior and juicy interior.

The restaurant also caters well to different dining needs. Alcohol is available, making it easy to pair dishes with a glass of wine, and the space supports catering for private or group events. Practical touches like Wi-Fi, acceptance of credit cards, and the option to make reservations add to the overall convenience, especially for diners planning ahead.

Ember Kuala Lumpur stands out not because it tries too hard, but because it understands its identity. The food, service, and setting come together naturally, creating an experience that feels genuine. Whether you’re exploring new locations around Taman Tun Dr Ismail or returning for familiar favourites, this restaurant consistently offers a dining experience that feels well thought out, welcoming, and memorable.

What customers say?

“ Visited Friday 3rd November. The staff terms their cuisine as Modern Asian. As for the food quality, price point and ambiance I would class this establishment as casual dining. My group of five diners went through almost the entire menu. Apologies for food pics, somehow I was in an eat first then take pictures frame. The cold noodles with duck confit was good, the angel hair had a nice springy texture. Next was the heirloom tomatoes with smoked yoghurt which was okay. Next up was the charcoal grilled mushrooms with cauliflower puree, this was excellent with the cauliflower puree giving the dish a lighter feel. Moving on to the meats and seafood. The Sabah cockles dish could have been great, found the cockles rather chewy but the dressing comprising of lime, lemongrass, tobiko and whatever else was superb. Everyone loved the kampung fried chicken (it uses half a free-range chicken) and same with the grilled fish of the day that married perfectly with its sauce. Unanimously the aged duck breast felt under-seasoned although the accompanying grilled asparagus was excellent. Lastly, the steak was good even though it was cooked to medium doneness, wanted medium rare but the restaurant only churns out medium doneness as part of their SOP and totally respect that. The portions of food overall were more than decent and personally the quality fair for the price. Nice ambiance with its slightly dim lighting, casual feel with an open kitchen where diners can see the kitchen staff busily preparing dishes. Service was good and accommodating as our request to spread out the dishes over 2+ hours was met with. ”

“ Great casual fine dine place! Personally, I'm a big fan of small sharing plates. Ordered 6 dishes even though there were only two of us. Portions are quite generous for this style of dining. Overall, everything was pretty solid. Ember feels like a place with a chef who wants to showcase what he has to offer, as opposed to just another restaurant for people to splurge mindlessly on. That being said, I was hoping for a bit more spark from the dishes. Maybe I'll be able to find it in subsequent seasonal menus. ”

“ Honest, down to earth, understated but with quiet confidence and food done tastefully and respectfully. I think it's important to bear in mind that this is not a chain restaurant but a small local establishment being run by owner cum chef himself. A hidden gem find, this place has my Malaysian heart support. Small menu but quality food at good reasonable price. ”

“ Had a lovely evening here with two friends. We ordered six dishes, from entrees to mains, and loved every single one. The beef tartare is a must-order! The combination of its fragrant flavors with the super crunchy bread is just superb. Another dish I really loved was the lamb char siu noodles. Uniquely good—I almost ordered another bowl! Unfortunately, they didn't have desserts that night, which was a bit disappointing. But it's okay—I hope they'll have them back for my next visit. ”

“ Love this place! The sharing plates were nicely portioned. Dishes were creative and unique. I never like sweet potatoes, beef tartare but they do it so well here. Service was attentive and the staff was always checking to make sure we had everything we need. ”

“ Ember has got to be KL's most underrated dining experience. Anything that chef Gary gets his hands on becomes edible gold after his fusion transmutation. Love that the menu is focused and they are ALL hits. The food hits the spot on a way that other Michelin star candidates would aspire to, at a price point that is far more value for money. Needless to say, this place is highly recommended! ”

“ Perfect place for a slightly fancier date night. Fusion food with an interesting mix of ingredients that bring out very unique flavours. The taste is definitely for those more on the adventurous side. The portions are on the smaller side, we ordered 3 dishes for 2 people and it was enough for us because ingredients the chefs used for every dish was rich. I rated atmosphere a 4/5. I did like open concept kitchen. Really enjoyed watching the chefs at their craft. Slight downside is that the place had a lot of echo so you would have to speak up to overcome it. ”

“ Food was great, interesting take on fusion flavours — it’s a mix of local cuisine and western. I’d highly recommend the grilled mushrooms and lamb charsiew. Grilled fish was great too with a fusion of Malay-style flavours. But I have to give credit to the service, there was only 1 waiter on the floor but managed all the tables well. They were very accommodating and helpful with all requests. They also serve wine by the carafe (~half a bottle), which i thought was interesting given it’s not commonly done at most restaurants. It allows for the perfect amount of wine for a meal, vs an entire bottle. Gave 4 stars for the atmosphere because it was just a tad too simple for the price-point. However, would return again to try their next menu! ”
